If you keep seeing stuff in your Interspire Email Marketer install about Dynamic Content Tags and have always wondered what they are and how they work this tutorial is for you.
The Dynamic Content Tag allows you to swap out a piece of content in an autoresponder or email campaign based on a custom field assigned to the contact list. For example, if you have different contact phone numbers for different states where you do business, you can display a different phone number in the email body based on the State field in the contact record. So, for our example a dynamic tag would say, “If the contact has the state “CA” in the state custom field, display the phone number 555-555-5555. You can setup a unique tag for each of the states listed in that custom field and mark one of them as the default that will display in the case the contact has that field blank or has something in the field that doesn’t match one of the existing tags.
The content you want to swap out can be as simple as a phone number or can be any piece of HTML to include an image, link, etc. Therefore, some common uses of Dynamic Content Tags include:
- Change out different local phone numbers based on subscriber state
- Change out links based on referring affiliate
- Change out offers based on past purchasing history
- Change out messaging based on membership levels
- Change out content based on the user’s email address domain
The possibilities are endless.
How to Setup Dynamic Content Tags for Interspire
Visit the Dynamic Content Tag menu under Email Campaigns to get started.
A “tag” is a swapable piece of content. Any given tag consists of two or more “blocks” that will be changed out based on custom field data.
Start by creating a new Tag. Then give the tag a simple and short name and select the contact list that is relevant to the tag.
The next step is to start to create content blocks for the Dynamic Content Tag. Click on “Create a Content Block.”
In this popup window give it a name and designate what custom field content will dictate if this block is displayed in the campaign. This will look similar to how you build contact list segments and you can select based on any custom field with various criteria. I have found that its best to use custom fields that are pull down, radio button, style fields so that you have some as-surety of the format of the content as opposed to open text fields.
Create a unique content block for each piece of content you want to swap out in the campaign or autoresponder. Be sure to take care in selecting a default block to be displayed for contacts on the list who do not fit the criteria of any of the content blocks.
